A county town of 1,400 years, wrapped in karst peaks on both sides of the Li River. West Street for the evening, the Yulong for the afternoon, and the countryside roads in between.
If you have one afternoon: raft the Yulong River. If you have one evening: West Street, for the beer fish. If you have a full day: add Moon Hill and the countryside roads by car or bicycle. If you have two days, add Xingping and the Impression Sanjie Liu show.
Yangshuo is about 90 minutes by road from Guilin and about the same from the airport — the airport is west of Guilin, so it is a different road entirely. The classic approach is the Li River cruise down, then a car back. Our airport-to-Yangshuo transfer goes direct without passing through Guilin city at all.
The town is walkable and the countryside is not. Bicycles are the traditional way to reach Moon Hill, the Big Banyan Tree and the Yulong bridges; a car with driver is more practical if you want to raft one section and be collected at the other end, or if it is raining, or hot, or you are more than four people.
