Twenty-five kilometres from Yangshuo, on the finest stretch of the Li — the view on the 20-yuan note is a fifteen-minute walk from the main street.
Xingping sits in the northeast of Yangshuo County, 25 kilometres from the county town and 63 from Guilin, on the bank of the Li River. It is the largest and best-looking old town on the river, and one of the four most famous ancient towns in Guangxi. It has been a trading settlement for well over a thousand years.
The best-known stretch of Li River scenery is here — the view printed on the back of the 20-yuan note is a short walk from the town along the riverbank. Because it is upstream of Yangshuo, the big cruise boats pass through but do not stop, which keeps the town quieter than West Street.
The old street is a single lane of brick-and-timber houses with a few shops and guesthouses. Yucun, a village across the water, is where the old merchant houses are best preserved. An hour on foot covers the main street; two hours lets you walk to the banknote viewpoint and back at a reasonable pace.
25 km northeast of Yangshuo town, 63 km from Guilin. Reachable by road, or as a stop on the Li River cruise if you arrange a private boat rather than the standard one.
