What it is

Moon Hill stands in Gaotian village, 8.5 kilometres south of Yangshuo town, and is the symbol of the county. The hill is pierced by a natural arch roughly circular in shape, which is where the name comes from. From different angles on the approach road the "moon" changes shape — full, half, crescent — which is the reason people stop repeatedly on the drive in.

The climb

Around 800 steps go up through the arch and out onto the ridge above it. It takes forty minutes to an hour for most people, and the last stretch is steep. From the top you look down on rice paddies, the Yulong River valley, and karst peaks in every direction — the best panorama in the Yangshuo area.

How to fit it in

It is the natural partner to the Yulong River: cycle or drive out, climb Moon Hill, then raft or walk the river on the way back. Our Yangshuo countryside day does exactly that sequence, which is roughly half a day in total.

What to look for

  • The arch from the approach road, changing shape as you drive
  • The ridge above the arch — the panorama
  • The Big Banyan Tree, 2 km away on the same road
  • The village lanes around Gaotian, if you walk instead of drive

Getting there

8.5 km south of Yangshuo town on the Gaotian road. Parking at the base; the climb starts from the ticket office.

Best time to go

Morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat — the climb is exposed and there is little shade. Clear days in autumn give the longest views.

Practical notes

  • 800 steps, steep near the top — not one for bad knees.
  • Take water; there is nothing on the way up.
  • The road view of the arch is free. You only pay to climb.

Questions about Moon Hill

How many steps?
Around 800, with the steepest section just below the arch. Forty minutes to an hour up for most people.
Can I see it without climbing?
Yes. The road passes directly beneath it and the arch is fully visible from the verge — free, and arguably the better photograph.
Is it suitable for children?
Older children yes, with supervision — the steps are uneven and there are drop-offs near the top. Not for toddlers.
What else is nearby?
The Big Banyan Tree is two kilometres away on the same road, and the Yulong River rafting sections are close by.
