What it is

Fubo Hill stands in the northeast of downtown Guilin on the bank of the Li River — a sheer-sided block of limestone whose foot is half in the water and half on land, which is why it earned the old name "Wonderland on Wave". It is small as Guilin hills go, around 60 metres, and you can climb it in fifteen minutes.

The carvings

The reason to come, beyond the view, is the Huanzhu Cave at the base, which holds several hundred stone carvings and Buddhist inscriptions, some dating to the Tang dynasty. They are worn but legible, and unlike most things in Guilin they are genuinely old rather than reconstructed for tourists.

The climb

About 200 steps to the top, on a path that narrows near the summit. The reward is the Li River seen from above, running north to south past the city. It is a twenty-minute stop on the way between Elephant Trunk Hill and Reed Flute Cave, which is how most guests see it.

What to look for

  • Huanzhu Cave and its Tang dynasty carvings
  • The summit view over the Li River
  • The Thousand Buddha Stele, a large carved rock face
  • The riverside path at the foot, which is free

Getting there

Northeast downtown Guilin, on the Li River bank. About ten minutes by car from city hotels; often walked from Elephant Trunk Hill along the river.

Best time to go

Year round. Morning light on the river is best; the hill gives shade in the afternoon.

Practical notes

  • The steps near the top are narrow — not one for anyone unsteady on their feet.
  • The riverside path outside the gate is free and gives most of the view.
  • Twenty minutes is enough; it fits easily between the other city sights.
