Elephant Trunk Hill

A natural arch shaped like an elephant drinking from the river, and the image on the city's logo, its postcards and half its souvenirs. Small, central, and worth an hour.

What it is

Elephant Trunk Hill sits at the point where the Li River and the Peach Blossom River meet, on the western edge of downtown Guilin. The hill is pierced by a natural arch, and the resulting silhouette — trunk in the water, body behind — is the reason it became the symbol of the city. It is not a mountain; it is a 50-metre limestone outcrop in the middle of town.

Inside the hill

There are several dozen caves in the outcrop. Two are worth the entrance fee: the Elephant Trunk Cave, which runs through the trunk itself and is a cool place to sit in summer with the river moving past the opening, and the Elephant Eye Cave higher up. The water cave is the one to make time for — on a hot afternoon it is genuinely refreshing.

How to see it properly

The classic photograph is taken from the far bank, across the water, where the full arch and its reflection make the complete elephant. That view needs no ticket. If you want to climb and go inside, buy the entrance ticket at the gate. Most guests combine it with Fubo Hill and Reed Flute Cave in a single city day.

What to look for

  • The arch and its reflection, from the opposite bank
  • Elephant Trunk Cave — the water cave through the trunk
  • The pagoda on top, if you climb
  • The Two Rivers and Four Lakes walk, which starts nearby

Getting there

Downtown Guilin, on the west bank of the Li River. Ten minutes by car from most city hotels, or a walk from the Binjiang Road area.

Best time to go

Year round. Early morning and late afternoon give the best light and the fewest tour groups; mid-morning in high season is crowded.

Practical notes

  • The free view from the far bank is genuinely the best photograph — do not assume you must pay.
  • Go early. By 10:00 in July the site is packed and the light is flat.
  • Combine with Fubo Hill (10 minutes away) rather than making a separate trip.

Questions about Elephant Trunk Hill

Do I need a ticket to see it?
Not to see it. The classic view from the opposite bank is free and public. You need a ticket only to enter the site and climb the hill.
How long should I allow?
An hour covers the site and the far-bank view. Most guests spend less.
Is it suitable for children or older visitors?
Yes. The riverside path is flat; the climb to the top has steps and can be skipped entirely without losing anything.
Can I combine it with other sights?
Yes — it pairs naturally with Fubo Hill and Reed Flute Cave in a half or full day. Our Guilin city day trip runs all three.
